Nearly 175 members, guests and Europump representatives attended the recent HI Annual Meeting in Marco Island, Florida. A total of 30 technical committee meetings were held, along with updates from economist Alan Beaulieu, an end-user panel with the U.S. Department of Energy, an address on Creating Marketplace Disruption, members began to explore pump industry workforce needs in the future and heard updates on new electronic data exchange standards, a new PD pump e-Learning course and much more.
Institute for Trend Research economist Alan Beaulieu provides HI members with an update on U.S. and global economic and macro-economic trends. His forecast of the current downturn in the economy and his model for linking future trends with business cycles has helped members prepare for the recession. Doug Kaempf, Director US Department of Energy’s Industrial Technology Program provides an update to HI members and sponsors of Pump Systems Matter, on DOE’s plans to reduce industrial energy intensity by 25% in the next ten years. HI, PSM and DOE are working together on a number of initiatives. Doug’s remarks and presentation were recorded and have been made available to meeting attendees.
Tryg Dahl, VP, Technology at Intelliquip updates HI members on the forthcoming Hydraulic Institute Electronic Data Exchange standard, due to be published later in 2009. The HI Board held an extended meeting to address HI’s expanding programs in education and government affairs. Thirteen CEOs of HI members companies serve on the HI Board.

Doug Kaempf, Director US Department of Energy’s Industrial Technology Program and Tom Haan, Sims Pump, discuss the significance of the potential for 29,000GWh per year of energy savings associated with just a 20% improvement in pump systems optimization. HI and Pump Systems Matter continue to work with the US DOE to support a 25% reduction in industrial energy intensity in the next ten years in the United States.
