We are operating an end suction centrifugal pump which takes suction from the bottom of an open tank. As the level in the tank drops, a vortex is formed which allows air into the pump. Our plant has a horizontal axially split case pump handling cooling water and the horizontal suction pipe includes a ninety degree elbow at the suction flange of the pump. The pump operation is noisy and one side of the impeller shows cavitation damage and the other side does not. I believe that the elbow on the suction is the major cause of the problem, but adding straight pipe in between is not practical. Is there another solution to this problem?
