The mission of the Hydraulic Institute (HI) is to serve member companies
and pump users by providing product standards and a forum for the exchange of
industry information.
Today, most major U.S. pump manufacturers are active members. Together they
work through the Institute to assure that:
HI is the industry's primary forum for the exchange of pump industry
information for management decision-making.
HI is an influential participant in the setting of domestic and
international standards.
HI is acknowledged worldwide as the spokesperson for the North American
pump industry HI is financially sound.
The Hydraulic Institute is a non-profit industry (trade) association
established in 1917. HI and its members are dedicated to excellence in the
engineering, manufacture, and application of pumping equipment.
The Institute has a leading role in the development of pump standards in North
America and worldwide. HI standards are developed within guidelines
established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). HI members
work through a number of technical committees to develop draft standards. The
Institute uses the ANSI Canvass Method, involving pump users and other
interested parties to reach consensus on published standards. HI standards are
developed to define pump products, installation, operation, performance,
testing, and pump life and quality. ANSI/HI standards are widely referenced in
other standards such as those of API, AWWA, ANSI B73, and more and are
accepted throughout North America and applied worldwide.
In the United States the Institute is the Secretariat for the U.S. Technical
Advisory Group (TAG) for ISO/TC-115, the international committee responsible
for writing pump standards. HI, in this regard, is responsible for developing
U.S. positions on draft international standards. The Institute also serves as
Secretariat to ISO/TC-115 Subcommittee 3 (SC 3). SC 3 is responsible for Pump
Installation and Operation, with an initial workgroup focus on Air Operated
Pumps, Viscosity Correction and Pump-Piping Guidelines.
HI maintains formal relationships with a number of organizations, representing
the interests of the pump industry.
HI has a formal relationship with Europump, an association of 18 national pump
associations in Europe. The HI/Europump Mutual Cooperation Agreement was
created to foster:
Sustained contacts among manufacturers and staff
Consistent communications with pump users on technical matters
Harmonization of worldwide statistical data on pumps and
Trans-Atlantic and transnational business relationships
HI and Europump are co-sponsoring the first International Pump Users Forum in
Karlsruhe, Germany from October 10-12, 2000 with a theme focused on Life Cycle
Costs of Pumps. Both organizations are working together to write a new Guide
to Life Cycle Cost Analysis for Pumping Systems to be available in late 2000.
Significant progress has been made on global harmonization of statistics, with
Europump issuing its first Order Intake survey in early 2000 - consistent with
similar HI statistical reports. HI and Europump members
The Hydraulic Institute has a long-standing relationship with the United
States Department of Energy (DOE). HI was a Charter Partner of the Motor
Challenge Program, focused on reducing industrial energy consumption and green
house gasses. With support from the US DOE, the Institute developed a
comprehensive educational program on Energy Reduction in Pumps and Pumping
Systems. HI has supported user training programs and workshops, co-authored
technical articles and industry sourcebooks and actively encouraged its
members to become Allied Partners with Department of Energy Office of
Industrial Technology (OIT). HI will become an Allied Partner with DOE OIT in
May 2000.
HI has technical liaison relationships with a number of other organizations,
including:
American Bearing Manufacturers Association (ABMA)
American Petroleum Institute (API)
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
American Waterworks Association (AWWA)
Fluid Sealing Association (FSA)
International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA)
Submersible Wastewater Pump Association (SWPA)
