HI 40.6 Methods for Rotodynamic Pump Efficiency Testing

Overview:

This standard establishes minimum testing protocols for testing of rotodynamic pumps for determination of pump efficiency in a uniform manner. It firmly aligns with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) energy conservation standards and test procedures for pumps, which incorporated by reference HI 40.6-2014 with certain exceptions and additions. The 2016 Edition of this standard addressed the exceptions and additions, which was carried-over into the 2021 Edition. The updates in the 2021 edition are related to specific testing requirements of circulator pumps.

This standard applies to testing of pumps generally for compliance to DOE regulations and the HI Energy Rating Program. It is important for regulators, pump manufacturers, 3rd party certification organizations, and testing laboratories to have this standard.

This standard is not intended for production pump testing. Refer to ANSI/HI 14.6 Rotodynamic Pumps for Hydraulic Performance Acceptance Tests and ANSI/HI 11.6 Rotodynamic Submersible Pumps for Mechanical and Electrical Acceptance Tests for production pump testing.

What’s New:

This standard supersedes the ANSI/HI 40.6-2016 edition. Updates in the new edition include:

  • New Appendix E that provides applicable exemptions and modifications to the test procedure when testing circulator pumps.
  • Updated Appendix D to provide more clarity in the guidance on recalibration periods.
  • General non-substantive editorial updates throughout the standard.
